Can you trust what you read online?

Can you trust what you read online?

By Hannah Buckland, Healthy Hearts Care Planner

Where do you obtain your healthy lifestyle information? These days, more and more people are turning to online sources. For sure, the Internet is one of the quickest and easiest ways to find the answer to any and every question you may have. But can you rely on the information you find to be accurate? Unfortunately, the answer is: not always. For every expert providing high-quality and reliable health information online, there may be two or three unqualified people putting out misleading or false information. As a result, there is a large volume of oversimplified, opinionated and inaccurate healthy lifestyle information out there. Myths are created, spread and accepted as common knowledge; often undermining the reliable and accurate information that does exist.

With such a vast amount of contradictory healthy lifestyle information available online, it’s no wonder people often struggle to determine the truth from the misinformation. And that’s why we’ve started this myth-busting series. Our aim is to clear up any confusion relating to healthy lifestyles. Every week we’ll take a common myth or misconception and break it down for you; using the most up-to-date scientific evidence so that, armed with this knowledge, you can be empowered to take control of your own health and wellbeing.

An important point we hope you take home from this series is to always be critical of any healthy lifestyle information you read online. What is the source? Does the author have any health credentials? How does this information compare to government or NHS recommendations? So you know where you can look for quality, evidence-based information, we’ve shared the links to some reputable websites that provide healthy lifestyle information you can trust:

NHS – Live Well: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/

British Nutrition Foundation – Healthy Living https://www.nutrition.org.uk/healthyliving.html

Heart UK https://www.heartuk.org.uk/

We also want this site to be a useful source of healthy lifestyle information. So, if there’s something you’ve heard that you’re not sure about, why not contact us so we can break it down for you? And make sure to look out for upcoming articles in our myth-busting series!
